I have the honour to report that the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation have requested us to allow 244,500 Canadian Northern Ontario Railway Company 1st Mortgage 3% Debenture Stock to be sub-

stituted for an equivalent value of the Consols which

we hold as part of the security against the Bank's

Note issue.

2. The Canadian stock is not a trustee

security but it is guaranteed both as regards

principal and interest by the Government of the

Dominion of Canada. We shall be glad to learn

whether the Secretary of State approves of the

exchange being made. The stock is not included

amongst the securities referred to in the third

paragraph of the letter dated the 12th December 1900

from the Lords Commissioners of the Treasury to the

Secretary of State for the Colonies, of which a copy

was forwarded to us in your letter of the 19th of

December 1900, No 40673.
